This undergraduate course will impart a basic understanding of psychological concepts about identity and culture and how they affect interactions with others. The course focuses on a multicultural perspective for understanding and working with diverse populations. This course introduces a variety of peer-reviewed psychological research about culture and intersecting identities. This course focuses on working with diverse populations across dimensions including but not limited to ethnicity, race, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, gender identity, ability status, age, and religion with a particular emphasis on ethnicity. Current theoretical and research literature regarding multiculturally competent counseling will be addressed. Students are simultaneously encouraged to reflect upon one’s own sense of self, beliefs, assumptions and behaviors to increase multicultural awareness and competence.
