Advanced Multicultural Counseling

This advanced multicultural counseling course introduces master’s level graduate students to a variety of concepts about intersecting identities and culture and how they affect counseling interactions with others. This applied course focuses on intentional and informed counseling with diverse populations across dimensions including but not limited to ethnicity, race, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, ability status, age and religion with a particular emphasis on ethnicity and identity. This course will move beyond theory about multiculturally competent counseling practices to include social justice perspectives and strategies for systemic advocacy. Students are simultaneously encouraged to reflect upon one’s own sense of self, beliefs, assumptions and behaviors to increase multicultural awareness and competence in social justice practices.
