Advanced Theories of Counseling & Intervention

This graduate course is designed to orient you to various aspects of counseling, including the diverse theories upon which it is founded. Throughout the textbook and this course, we emphasize that an accurate and thorough understanding of counseling and psychotherapy is needed to become knowledgeable about the varied work mental health professionals do. Counseling theories will be assessed from a multicultural perspective. Students are encouraged to think about how the various approaches might fit with their personal style and beliefs about counseling. This course provides a foundation of knowledge about the major theories by addressing ethical issues in counseling, counseling terminology, the major contributors, and the culturally appropriate use of theories and interventions in the context of human development. Students will apply the various theoretical approaches to clinical case studies using vignettes and videos.
